The considerable increase in the number of tourists travelling each year to the island of Gran Canaria is rapidly diminishing the island’s capacity to accommodate all those visitors who are attracted by its cultural idiosyncrasy, its incomparable climate and the natural beauty of its landscape.
This is the reason why the natural and energy resources that must be employed to meet consumption demands have become almost immeasurable, not only for an ever-growing local population, but also for each of the tourist vacancies that are occupied in the island every season. Therefore, there must be an increasing awareness of the progressive deterioration suffered by its natural resources, as well as of the overpopulation that compels them to be exploited in such an indiscriminate manner.
This is, specifically, the central idea of this social and environmental awareness campaign, which emphasises that both residents and visitors to this island should learn to respect their surroundings and to use, in the most appropriate and responsible way, the natural resources it provides. Only in this way will sustainable development exist, allowing us to continue enjoying the unique qualities that the island of Gran Canaria possesses.
